Working within the Agriculture & Environment Services department and reporting to the Manager, Environment Services, The Environmental Specialist serves as the subject matter expert on environmental practices and regulations that support County development and operations. This position will provide guidance for the environmental considerations within Planning & Development activities including attending pre-application meetings, reviewing development referrals and conducting, coordinating and reviewing environmental assessments. The Environmental Specialist will manage restoration and conservation initiatives, ensure effective project management and efficiency while maintaining alignment with environmental regulations and policies. This position will coordinate the annual environmental monitoring and reporting for County projects and assets in addition to providing ongoing guidance to various departments for ensuring adherence with applicable environmental regulations to support environmentally responsible planning, development, and operations across the organization.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences and/or Environmental Planning/Sustainability. 
  • Designation as a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) or Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) is required.  
  • Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of professional experience working in environmental policy, conservation and restoration with the ability to interpret and advise on relevant regulations. Previous municipal or public sector experience is an asset.
  • Experience in wetland identification, delineation and assessment. A Wetland Authenticating Professional Designation is considered an asset.
  • Ability to review and conduct Biophysical assessments.
  • Experience overseeing project management and contractor management activities. Formal Project Management Training is considered an asset.
  • Strong customer services and communication skills with the ability to provide technical guidance to a variety of individuals.  
Requirements:
  • Ability to primarily work in-person at Agricultural Services Building – 4603 47 Avenue, Stony Plain, AB.
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract provided upon hire.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required upon hire, excluding candidates under the age of 18 and current Parkland County employees.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

A Starting Salary of:$91,400 to $98,900 per yearMax Salary Potential:$115,600 per year
